What Is a Lipoma?
A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) fatty growth that develops just beneath the skin. They're among the most common soft tissue growths in adults -- typically soft to the touch, slow-growing, and painless.
That said, not every lump under the skin is a lipoma. Some growths that look and feel similar can occasionally turn out to be something more serious, including rare forms of cancer.
That's why any new or changing lump is worth having evaluated by a qualified physician, even if the odds are strongly in favor of it being harmless.When a lipoma is confirmed, removal is usually straightforward. Surgery is often recommended when the growth is enlarging, causing discomfort, or pressing on nearby nerves or tissue.
When to Get Evaluated
You may be a candidate for medically necessary removal if you have any of the following:
- Pain when pressing on the lump
- Numbness or tingling near the area
- A mass that is growing
- Discomfort when lying or sitting
- Limited movement due to the mass
- A lump larger than 2 to 5 cm
If yes, surgical removal may be medically necessary.

Insurance may cover removal if the lipoma is painful, growing, deep, or causing functional problems. Small, painless lumps removed for cosmetic reasons are typically not covered.
Signs that warrant evaluation include rapid growth, firmness, pain, numbness/tingling, or size larger than 5 cm. If you notice changes, schedule an exam.
Not always. Ultrasound or MRI may be recommended if the mass is large, deep, changing, or atypical on exam.
Removal is typically performed with local anesthesia or appropriate sedation depending on size and location. Discomfort is usually mild and manageable.
Most patients return to light activity within a few days. Larger or deeper lipomas may need a slightly longer recovery.
Recurrence is uncommon when the lipoma is fully excised. Complete removal helps minimize the chance of return.
All removed tissue is sent to pathology to confirm the diagnosis and rule out atypical conditions.
